Earlier this year I had the pleasure of attending a group street photography workshop in London with the great Mark Fearnley, I have admired his work for a very long time and it’s a genre of photography I have been interested in trying, Especially as in recent times I have lost a bit of motivation with my photography and looking to get that creative spark back.
Right from the get-go Mark made everyone feel at ease with his witty humour and everyone soon got to know each other, throughout the day we walked a fair few miles visiting different locations. Once at a location Mark would ask us what compositions we saw before then showing his examples of images he had captured previously, He tried to emphasise to work a scene and look at things differently be that using the light creatively or the angles used to create a more compelling image.
At each location we stopped at he would make sure he came around to everyone to see how we were finding things and if we had any questions, when we stopped for a lunch break he even gave us an insight into the business side of photography and social media advice.
By the end of the day although a little exhausted, a couple of us then decided to go off and put the skills we had just been taught into practice and headed off to the tate modern for a couple of hours!.
If you are thinking about wanting to try this type of photography I can fully recommend Mark, It was an amazing day spent with great company with everyone there immersed in our passion for photography.
Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes, take water, and if you have fair skin and go on a workshop in the summer then probably sun cream (which I forgot!)
Check out some of the images I captured on the workshop and also the rest of my portfolio of street images can be found on my website.
