In this blog, I have put together a list of some of my personal favourite locations to photograph in Suffolk.
1. Pin Mill
This location is a firm favourite of mine, It sits on the river orwell and there are numerous boat wrecks, Somewhere that’s very photogenic at any time of the day. However, I prefer to get there before high tide as it always surprises me how quickly the tide recedes so always try to give myself plenty of time to look for compositions.
There is a cheap pay-and-display car park just before the Butt and Oyster pub on the left on Pin Mill Road, Postcode: IP9 1JN
Head towards the pub follow it around to the right and follow the track past the moored barges and you will see the boat wrecks on the left.
2. Shingle street
There is a free car park on your left as you head down Shingle Street Road, Postcode:IP12 3BG
3. Cobbold’s point, Felixstowe
There is free parking on the road right next to these, Opposite the Fludyers Hotel, Undercliff Rd E, Felixstowe IP11 7LU
4. Covehithe
Covehithe is situated just North of Southwold, This is a really popular location for photographers due to the number of fallen trees littering the beach due to coastal erosion, It’s actually the fastest eroding part of the coastline in Suffolk. Make sure you get there for or before high tide to get the seawater covering the trees!
There is also St Andrews church which is a bit of an odd church, Within the ruins of the church is another newer church which is open to the public, It’s worth a look even if you are just there to head down to the beach, To get to this trees park outside the church and head back down the road you came down and you will see a sign for a footpath on your left follow it down to the beach then walk north up the beach towards Benacre, It’s quite a walk!
This is another place that’s great for astrophotography due to the low light pollution and somewhere I plan to head to for more night shoots.
Address for Saint Andrews church: Mill Ln, Covehithe NR34 7JJ
5. Bawdsey beach
This is a go-to of mine if I can not decide where to go because there are always compositions to be had here with the decaying groynes and eroding structures littering the beach. You never know what will be washed up on the beach that will create an interesting subject, This is somewhere I prefer to get to at low tide as there are a lot of structures uncovered, At high tide, your compositions are more limited and the groynes pictured below become submerged, But Not forgetting the quay where there is always boats moored great for those calm misty mornings!.
There’s a free car park at Bawdsey Quay and then there is a footpath that leads down to the beach, It’s only a short walk
Parking: 42 Ferry Rd, Woodbridge IP12 3AX
